October 14th—Jointly organized by SASS, Committee for Liaison with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese of CPPCC Shanghai Committee, and the Better Hong Kong Foundation, the Shanghai-Hong Kong Cooperation and Development Seminar was held in Shanghai. The theme of this year’s seminar was “Promoting 'Bringing In and Going Global' Through Shanghai-Hong Kong Cooperation”. The seminar provided a platform for government officials, experts and scholars from Shanghai and Hong Kong to have an in-depth discussion, seeking strategies and sharing visions for enhancing Shanghai-Hong Kong cooperation and fostering development.

Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Chen Jie, Vice Mayor of Shanghai Municipal People's Government, delivered keynote speeches. Hu Wenrong, Chairman of CPPCC Shanghai Committee, and Professor Wang Dezhong, President of SASS, delivered opening remarks.

In his speech, Leung Chun-ying reviewed the achievements of Shanghai-Hong Kong cooperation in the past. He noted that Shanghai and Hong Kong share a solid foundation for collaboration, with immense potential for cooperation in facilitating the “bringing in” of capital and talent as well as the “going global” of Chinese culture, art, and services. He emphasized the need for both regions to strengthen collaboration across more fields, at higher levels, and in deeper dimensions to jointly contribute new momentum to national development and enhance competitiveness.

Professor Wang Dezhong highlighted that as onshore and offshore RMB market centers, Shanghai and Hong Kong could engage in deeper cooperation to advance RMB internationalization. He proposed strengthening collaboration in high-end shipping services, including shipping finance, insurance, and maritime arbitration, to address gaps in China’s development as a major shipping power. Professor Wang also underscored the importance of promoting international cooperation in technological innovation by attracting international capital, multinational corporations, and global talent to participate in domestic research and innovation. He expressed the hope that SASS, as a national high-end think tank, could deepen collaboration with Hong Kong's research institutes to provide intellectual support for Shanghai-Hong Kong Cooperation.
