The 32nd International Philosophy Olympiad(IPO) was held in Helsinki, Finland from May 16th to 19th, 2024. Prof. Shi Xuan from Institute of Philosophy, SASS served as the team leader for the Chinese team and international judge at the Chinese team at the event.
This year's Olympiad was the largest ever, with 110 participants from 51 countries. After intense competition, the Chinese contestant Xu Ziyang won the gold medal, marking China's first gold medal in this competition. Another Chinese contestant, Xia Yujia, received a commendation prize.
IPO is an international competition for high school students under the age of 20, jointly organized by the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP) and UNESCO. Since its inception in 1993, the IPO has been held annually, with over 50 countries participating. Each contestant undergoes national selections in their respective countries. According to IPO regulations, the host country can send up to 10 students, while other countries can send a maximum of 2 students each.
The Institute of Philosophy at Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences is the sole authorized unit in China for the IPO, as a member of IPO. Since 2012, the Institute of Philosophy has organized the Chinese selections for the IPO and led the selected students to participate in the international competition, aiming to bridge civilizations through the IPO platform and promote cultural exchange. Over the years, the Institute of Philosophy has made significant progress in organizing selection competition for the IPO in China, with the Chinese team achieving increasingly better results and gaining more influence in this international event.
On January 23rd, 2024, the Institute of Philosophy successfully hosted the 32nd Chinese selection for the IPO, selecting two students and leading them to participate in the IPO in Helsinki, Finland, where they achieved China's first gold medal in this competition.
