SASS Hosted People’s City Thematic Forum during the 2022 World Cities Day Global Observance

The 2022 World Cities Day Global Observance and 2nd SDG Cities Global Conference were held in Shanghai on October 31, with the theme of “Taking Action from Local to Global”. President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the 2022 World Cities Day Global Observance and 2nd SDG Cities Global Conference. 


As one of the four thematic forums of the 2022 World Cities Day Global Observance, the People’s City Thematic Forum was held in Fengxian district of Shanghai on the morning of November 1. The forum was co-hosted by the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai Municipal Housing and Urban-Rural Construction Administration Commission and Fengxian District Government. 

Wang Weiren, Deputy Secretary-General of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, Li Zheng, Secretary of Fengxian District Committee, Yu Jianyong, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Donghua University, and Wang Ke, Deputy Director General of Department of Building Energy Conservation and Science and Technology of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development attended the forum and delivered the opening speech. Yao Kai, Director of Shanghai Housing and Urban-Rural Development Administration Commission delivered a concluding speech. Representatives from UNESCO, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Shanghai Municipal Government, Fengxian District Committee, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Donghua University and other institutions attended the forum. 

In the keynote speech session, Quan Heng, Secretary of the Party Committee and researcher of the SASS, expressed his congratulations on the successful opening of the forum on behalf of the SASS and made a keynote speech on accelerating the reform of income distribution and promoting the development of a people’s city of joint contribution and shared benefits. 

The meeting also introduced the Shanghai Voluntary Assessment Report on the Implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 2022 (or Shanghai Report 2022). The report was compiled under the guidance of the Shanghai Housing and Urban-Rural Development Commission, the Development Research Center of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. The Shanghai Report 2022 compilation Team of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and the Shanghai World Cities Day Affairs Coordination Center were responsible for the work. A team led by Deng Zhituan, Professor of the Institute of Urban and Population Development of SASS, has been working on this project since 2021.
