On August 31, 2020, Carlos Miguel Pereira, Cuban Ambassador to China, visited SASS and gave a speech themed with “Cuba and China”. Zhang Daogen, President and Research Professor of SASS, extended a warm welcome to the ambassador and Cuban guests. Zhu Guohong, Vice President of SASS, chaired the meeting. Nestor Enrique Torres Olivera, Consul General of Cuba in Shanghai, accompaniedduring the whole time of the visit.
Ambassador Pereira not only emphasized the necessity to strengthen exchange and cooperation between Cuban and Chinese research institutions, but also expressed his gratitude to SASS for the careful preparations for the reception. This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Cuba. Ambassador Pereira introduced the development of Cuba in his speech with focus on the theme of “China and Cuba”, and concisely expounded on Cuban Government’s formulation of National Economic and Social Development Plan for 2030. According to him, Cuba was the first country in the Western Hemisphere to establish diplomatic relations with China. China-Cuba relations have withstood various tests in the past 60 years, and both countries are in the prime of bilateral relations throughout the history. He spoke highly of China's tremendous economic and social development achievements in reform and opening-up over the past 40 years. He pointed out that Cuba, like China, persists in taking the path of socialist development with its own characteristics, thereby providing a fundamental guarantee for economic and social development. Stressed by Ambassador Pereira, Cuba and China are good friends, good comrades and good brothers. Both countries enjoy broad prospects for cooperation and exchange in various fields and at various aspects. Therefore, both countries should continue to leverage their respective strengths and advantages, and make progress in closer cooperation.
After the speech, Ambassador Pereira took in-depth exchanges and discussions with experts and scholars from SASS. Wang Jian, Director and Research Professor of Institute of International Relations, Shen Guilong, Director and Research Professor of Institute of China Studies, Zhao Beiwen, Deputy Director and Research Professor of Institute of World Economy, and other scholars from related institutes also attended.
