Founded in 1958 and administered by the Municipal Government of Shanghai, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) is China’s oldest institution for the humanities and social sciences and is the largest one outside the capital of Beijing. SASS has 18 institutes which conduct theoretical research and applied studies in the humanities and social sciences, with a special focus on important issues arising from the current social and economic transformation and the country’s continual reform and development. With its comprehensive research achievements, SASS contributes greatly to the nation and the municipality through its policy studies for government authorities and training as well as consulting services. Its research findings and publications have been particularly influential with policy-makers as well as with the greater public.SASS currently has more than 800 employees, of which over 500 are research staffs. Among SASS researchers, there are 131 research professors, 167 associate research professors.

SASS started to enroll graduate students from 1979, as it was one of the first batch of educational institutions which were got the conferring degrees authorization from the academic degree commission of the state council.  Our subjects involved 6 categories they are Philosophy, Economics, Law, History, Literature, Management science. And we have 8 doctoral degree programs, 61 master degree programs, 58 tutors of doctoral programs and 193 tutors of master programs.The amount of current students is over 600.

Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences recruits foreign students.  We welcome foreign citizens to apply for Ph.D. and master’s degree in our academy.

Qualification

• The applicant must hold a valid foreign passport, be healthy, well-conducted, and abide by the laws of the people's republic of China and the regulations of the Academy;

•  Applying for the study for master degree requires the education background which is equal to Bachelor’s degree of China, and two recommendation letters written by non-Chinese nationality associate professors below the age of 40;

• Applying for the study for Ph.D. requires the educational background which is equal to Master's degree of China, and two recommendation letters written by non-Chinese nationality  professors below the age of 45;

• Achieved the level 6 of Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) or above, or achieved the entrance requirements of the applied major;

• The applicant's academic achievement, research ability, and other conditions shall meet the entrance requirements of the applied major.

Length of studying and Term

•  Graduate study for master’s degree lasts for 3 years, for Ph.D. lasts for 4 years;

•  There are two semesters in each academic year, spring and autumn. The autumn semester is the beginning of the new academic year, generally from every September to January of the following year.Spring semester generally starts from every February to June. There are two vacations in each academic year, winter and summer vacation.  The winter vacation is 4 weeks, and the summer vacation is usually two months.

•  Tuition:

  •  Master:RMB 25,000.00 per academic year

  •  Ph.D.:RMB 30,000.00 per academic year

Application Open date, Requirements, Procedures and Materials:

 The applicants shall be recommended by the working unit or applied by individuals. The following materials (copy) shall be submitted through face to face, mail, fax or e-mail by the applicant-self to the International Cooperation and Exchange Office of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Graduate School. All the original materials are required for registration after enrollment.
