Institute of Information Sciences, established at Shanghai in October 1978, is an information think-tank specializing in social science research and academic information service. It was formerly known as Institute of Academic Information of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, and was renamed Institute of Information Sciences of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences in December 1992. After more than 30 years’ development, Institute of Information Sciences has established the development fields of information research, decision-making consultation, knowledge service, and information transfer. With the mission of “to provide information with wisdom”, and the values of “glad research, learning and improvement, sincere cooperation, happy experience”, it aims to become “a top-ranking information think-tank of China”. 

With “Information society research” as the research direction of key discipline, and “information resource management" as the distinctive discipline, Institute of Information Sciences mainly studies the major theoretical and practical issues occurring during social and economic informationization, focuses on information resources, electronic management, information security, smart city, industry information, foreign social science trends and so on, studies and analyzes the domestic and foreign new theories and ideas, and provides multilayer and multiform cutting-edge information services for the governments, enterprises and public institutions.

The total number of staff is 39, including 3 professors and 17 associate professors. Among them, 11 have obtained a doctorate degree. It provides master degree curricula of information sciences, and history of scientific socialism and international communist movement.
