Established in 2014, the Institute of Ecology and Sustainable Development (IESD), SASS evolved from its predecessor, SASS Center for Ecological Economy and Sustainable Development, which founded in 1986. The IESD conducts research on theories of ecological civilization, mechanisms for building an ecological civilization and solutions for sustainable development of resources and environment. Prof. Zhou Fengqi is the current director of the IESD.
 
The research departments of IESD include the Office of Natural Capital, the Office of Green Economy and the Office of Low-carbon Development. The IESD is also the chairman organization of the Shanghai Academic Society for Ecological Economy (SASEE), where Secretariat of SASEE is located. The editorial board of SASEE quarterly Dynamics for Eco-Economy and Sustainable Development is also based here.
 
In recent years, the IESD extensively absorbs and integrates research resources, and is constantly developing its research team. It actively contributes to the development of leading think tank, and has made positive progress in academic research and policy studies of ecological economics. The research team conducts regional-level, national-level and international-level cooperative research projects every year, and wins a lot of awards such as Shanghai Policy-Consulting Award, Shanghai Award for Outstanding Works in Philosophy and Social Science, China Award for Excellent Annual Reports (Pishu), etc. Several policy consulting services have been accepted by the provincial and ministerial policy makers. The IESD has consecutively compiled and published Annual Report on Resource and Environment Development of Shanghai for nine years, with focuses on low-carbon city, resilient city, coordinated environmental governance in the Yangtze River Delta, Ecological Community of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, green development and transformations, etc. With these achievements, the IESD is constantly devoted to the researches on green development and environmental governance of Shanghai, the Yangtze River Delta and the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
 
The IESD is comprised of a team of 16 members in which 14 are research fellows. In addition, the IESD offers doctoral programs on ecological economics in order to produce research professionals who devote to the ecological civilization. The IESD is keen to join hands with all domestic and foreign counterparts who are dedicated to theoretical innovation and practical exploration in the field of ecological civilization, and jointly spare no effort to make an Eco-Shanghai, a Beautiful China and an Eco-friendly Global Village.
