Founded in 1958 and administered by the Municipal Government of Shanghai, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) is China’s oldest research institution for the humanities and social sciences. SASS is a not-for-profit think tank based in Shanghai and independent of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). Mission Our mission is to conduct high-quality and objective theoretical research for the nation and municipality. Using this research, we aim to provide effective, enduring and innovative public policy recommendations, consultation and education in the process of guiding social transformation and reform. Funding Although SASS receives most of its funds from the Shanghai municipal government, it also draws financial support from various non-governmental sources at home and abroad including foundations, corporations and individuals. Leadership SASS is administered by a seven-member executive leadership committee, which oversees all academic and administrative affairs. It is composed of: Dr. Pan Shiwei (潘世伟), Party Secretary of CPC Committee, Professor of Politics Dr. Zuo Xuejin (左学金), Executive Vice President, Professor of Economics Dr. Tong Shijun (童世骏), Vice Party Secretary of CPC Committee, Professor of Philosophy Dr. Hong Minrong (洪民荣), Vice Party Secretary of CPC Committee, Professor of Economics Prof. Xiong Yuezhi (熊月之), Vice President, Professor of History Dr. Huang Renwei (黄仁伟), Vice President, Professor of International Studies Mr. Xie Jinghui (谢京辉), Vice President There is also a separate academic committee which guides the research and evaluation of SASS’s research. Staff As of the end of 2009, SASS has up to 800 employees, of which 310 are women. There are 537 research fellows at SASS, among whom 125 are research professors and 146 are associate research professors. Institutes and Centers SASS consists of 15 institutes and 19 interdisciplinary centers which conduct theoretical research and applied studies in the humanities and social sciences. A special focus is made on important issues arising from the current social and economic transformation occurring in China and the country’s continual reform and development. The Institutes are: Institute of Economics Institute of National Economy Institute of World Economy Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies Institute of Eurasian Studies Institute of Literature Institute of Journalism Institute of History Institute of Philosophy Institute of Information Sciences Institute of Law Institute of Sociology Institute of Religious Studies Institute of Youth and Juvenile Studies Institute of Demography and Development Studies To meet the challenges of social and economic change in China today, SASS has also established interdisciplinary centers such as the Center for Deng Xiaoping Theory Studies, Center for Contemporary Politics of China Studies, Center for Urban and Regional Studies, Center for Shanghai Automobile Industrial Development Strategy Studies, and the Center for International Strategic Studies. SASS has also occasionally established other specific centers, programs and teams for studies on important countries and priority subjects such as Center for Business Ethics Studies and Center for Eco-economy and Sustainable Development. Key and Expert Research Programs There are 12 key research programs at SASS. All are highly regarded nationally and contribute greatly to the public policy research in their fields. They are: Employment and Social Security Cultural Creative Industry Concession Studies Family Studies Jewish Studies Business Ethics Comparative Studies on Sino-Western Philosophy Philosophy of Science Management of Information Resources Urban Studies Regional Economics Econometrics Confucian Classics International Finance Urban Folk-customs Chinese & Foreign Marxism Theories of Literature and Art Social Policy of Children Graduate School SASS Graduate School enrolls more than 200 graduate students for master and doctoral programs every year. It currently has some 600 registered graduate students in different disciplines, among which 130 are Ph.D. students. Foreigners are warmly welcome to apply for graduate programs at SASS. Library The SASS Library headquarters is located at 1610 Zhongshan Xilu. Its subsidiary branch is at 7/622 Huaihai Zhonglu. The SASS library has a rich collection of old books, newspapers and magazines. There are 1,150,000 books, of which 210,000 are in foreign languages. Around 50,000 books and 1,500 magazines and newspapers are added to the library annually. The SASS library also shares written and electronic material with dozens of libraries at home and abroad. The SASS library is in the process of establishing a database with ample authoritative information on a wide variety of topics that will be available to policy-makers and scholars at home and abroad. Publications SASS publishes 13 publicly available journals, a weekly newspaper and several yearbooks of the cities, districts and counties in the Yangtze River Delta, in addition to about 200 books on specific research findings annually. Six journals, including Social Sciences, Politics and Law, and Historical Review, are listed among the Chinese Key Journals. The local or central government sponsors many books by SASS scholars that receive wide distribution. International Activities Individual Exchange Each year SASS hosts numerous bilateral exchanges and meetings between visiting researchers, journalists, officials and local scholars. SASS also hosts overseas scholars conducting research in residence from one month to two years; most are Ph.D. candidates and postdoctoral researchers. Some funds are available to support visiting researchers upon application. In 2009, more than 1,000 foreign scholars visited SASS, all were given full access to the internet and library alongside other required administrative support. At the same time, SASS actively encourages its own scholars to go abroad, and a growing number of them are financially supported to do this by the Academy. In 2009, more than 100 SASS scholars traveled abroad for research, lectures and conferences. SASS also invites internationally recognized scholars as Honorary Research Professors or Distinguished Research Professors for research collaboration and consultation. By the end of 2009, SASS had awarded 19 honorary and 9 distinguished research professorships to prominent scholars from around the world. Institutional Cooperation SASS has a wide international exchange network. By the end of 2009, SASS has signed long-term exchange agreements and Memorandum of Understanding with 55 foreign universities and institutions covering Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, France, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. Scholars and PHD students from partner universities and institutions may apply for sponsorship according to the respective agreements. SASS also has strong links to dozens of other research institutions and foundations. SASS has developed many cooperative projects with foreign counterparts including The Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney in Australia, the University of Frankfurt, the International Centre for the Study of East Asian Development in Japan and The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. The most recent cooperative projects are: Study of China’s Labor Market, Research on Cultural Diversity and Dispute Resolution, Social Research of Land Loss Farmers in China. Foreign researchers are actively welcomed to participate in the SASS projects. SASS receives a number of grants from foreign foundations annually. Foreign grants contribute much to SASS’s research work and help support cooperative projects with foreign partners. Conferences and Symposia SASS holds dozens of international conferences, lectures, seminars and workshops annually. The biannual World Forum on China Studies has been officially recognized by the government as the most important forum of its kind. In 2009, topics discussed included a Conference on Transition from School to Work, the Shanghai-New York Forum on International Finance 2009, the Shanghai Forum on Asian Financial Cooperation, for example. All were highly valued by relevant scholars and policy-makers. SASS also regularly invites internationally renowned scholars to give keynote addresses, as well as co-hosting numerous conferences and other activities abroad with foreign partners. SASS International Office SASS International Office (Foreign Affairs Office) is responsible for promotion, coordination and administration of international academic exchanges and cooperation. The main campus and headquarters is located at 7/622 Huaihai Zhonglu (淮海中路622弄7号), one of Shanghai’s primary commercial districts. The other two locations are 1610 Zhongshan Xilu(中山西路1610号) and 622 Shunchang Road(顺昌路622号). |
